Paramedical Tattooing: Vitiligo

Vitilio Camouflage Permanent Makeup is an extremely effective vitiligo treatment. Results are instantaneous and last up to 3 years without washing off. The semi-permanent makeup pigment camouflages the white patches of skin so they blend right in with your regular skin tone.

This treatment can be performed to the face, hands, or almost anywhere on the body. Up close, it looks like a professionally applied make-up concealer but it does not smudge or washes off. It is the next best thing to a cure for vitiligo.
Cosmetic Camouflage, or Camouflage Tattooing, can help to heal the appearance of the skin as well as your spirit or self-image. The procedure medical doctors often refer to as micro-pigmentation or permanent tattooing, more commonly known as permanent makeup, has become a viable option for quickly and easily helping patients in the appearance aspect of their recovery and healing. Now there’s growing awareness and agreement among medical doctors regarding this cosmetic solution they can recommend with confidence and proven results for patients.

Have Realistic Expectations with Cosmetic Camouflage:
  • Vitiligo camouflage can begin once you’ve been cleared for it by your physician.
  • If you do need cosmetic camouflage, it’s critical you reach a positive outcome following this process. Cosmetic camouflage can often work quite well, but it is important for you to understand that this procedure does not guarantee you will completely and instantly remove all visible signs of the previous skin condition. You must have realistic expectations.
  • I have done thousands of successful permanent makeup procedures since 2010. I will not just tell you everything you want to hear to make you into a client. I will give you my expert opinion. I will also encourage you to seek other opinions if you’re still uncertain after our consultation.
In most cases, after a couple of applications, you will see significant improvement of the appearance of the area.

Choose your Permanent Makeup Artist the Same Way You Chose your Surgeon
In getting multiple medical opinions, you have learned a great deal in the process. One thing is clear: not all surgeons are created equal; not all are right for you. It is important to point out that surgeons specializing in oncology or plastic surgery, are all required to live up to the same established ethical, professional, and safety regulations and standards.

It is equally important to point out that, unfortunately, the permanent makeup industry is lagging way behind in these critical areas. For example, some permanent makeup technicians promote themselves to potential clients as being “certified.” What they do not tell you is they received this camouflaged certification after working on as few as five faces.  Ask questions; you have the right to feel comfortable and secure about any procedure performed on you.  Remember, you’re paying for it, and it is your body.

In choosing the right permanent makeup artist to apply cosmetic camouflage on you, it is imperative to find one who has the knowledge, training, caring approach, and skills and experience you will want and need. After all, the only thing worse than having the appearance of your breasts damaged by breast surgery, is having their condition worsened by a poor camouflage tattooing performed by an inferior permanent makeup artist.

Warning: Since Texas does not regulate permanent cosmetics training or schools, there are many poorly trained and inexperienced technicians who make mistakes. If a technician has made an error on your face, DO NOT let her “fix it” by tattooing over any flesh colored pigment. Without very advanced training, years of experience and high quality of product, it will look unnatural because your skin will lose its translucency (transparency). Also, the pigment color may not closely match your skin tone (as shown in  photos below). In addition, if you decide later to have it removed by a laser, the laser will turn the flesh colored pigment black.

Camouflage Permanent Makeup: The Finishing Touch
Cosmetic camouflage for scars and burns often delivers the “finishing touch” for the clients. Camouflaging any area is critical in putting the experience behind you. It can mark the end of one long or short challenging road, and hopefully the beginning of a new, happier and healthier road in your life.  After all you’ve been through, it’s important to look and feel “normal” and “whole” again.  Good for you.

Vitiligo Camouflage FAQ
What is Micropigmentation for Vitiligo?
Micropigmentation for Vitiligo is a camouflage procedure. Custom blended pigment is deposited into the white areas of the skin to blend with surrounding skin. It is a semi-permanent makeup treatment that last for years without washing off.
What happens during each Vitiligo Treatment?
Colors are custom blended for each area to match your skin tones. Pigments are non-toxic and sourced from natural minerals. We have never had a single allergic reaction to any of our products. Pigment is deposited into the white areas of the skin using proprietary equipment that houses a single acupuncture needle (the width of a human hair) that gently vibrates on the outer layers of the skin. The vibration deposits pigment into the skin until the desired color is achieved. Your technician evaluates the skin at the beginning of each session and custom blends a color to best match your natural skin tone. Your treatment, the custom pigment blends, are meticulously charted and photographed for future sessions and reference.
Will it hurt?
The level of discomfort varies from person to person depending on what area of the body is being camouflaged. We always use a strong topical numbing cream. In addition, we use a single acupuncture needle (the width of a single human hair) that gently vibrates on the outer layers of the skin so discomfort is minimal.
How closely can the color be matched?
The goal is to match the color, over the course of your treatments, so that no one can tell that you ever had vitiligo.
Color matching is achieved through the series of sessions during which the color is evaluated and your custom color mix is fine-tuned as needed. About two weeks after each procedure, the skin exfoliates and the color settles in so we re-evaluate and adjust in a subsequent session as needed.
How many sessions do I need?
Multiple sessions are needed in order to seamlessly match your color. During each session, a pigment is blended into the skin in layers. For our new clients, initially, 4 sessions approximately 4 to 6 weeks apart are required. Since some of the pigment exfoliates after each session, a series of sessions is necessary to build the color into the skin and seamlessly match your skin color.  It takes about 4 weeks for the color to completely settle and stabilize. During each subsequent session, more pigment is added to the skin in thin layers changing the color of the skin and blending it to your natural skin color. You will see instant results after each session. Every 4 weeks you will return for more pigmentation until you have had 4 treatments. During each session, the color is reviewed and adjustments are made if needed.
Each vitiligo camouflage treatment is unique, so the number of sessions needed to obtain the desired results will vary based on each client’s individual situation. On average, 80% of our clients are color matched in 4 treatments.
What can i expect after each session?
You will see the results right away! After each session the pigment will appear more intense and will lighten up in time for your next session where we add more pigment. After each session, the color fades less until the color is matched and blended. Your skin will be a little red and irritated between 3-10 days after each appointment. Like a sun burn. No makeup or skin care products can be used on this area for 7 days. After 7 days, you can use your normal products again.
How long will it last?
The final results typically last up to 3 years on the skin, though this varies somewhat individually. During that time, it will gradually fade. Most clients choose to maintain by coming in for a touch-up session every six months to once per year or two depending on your skin. With maintenance sessions your vitiligo will never be seen again.
How often do I need maintenance (refresher/touch-up) appointments for Vitiligo Camouflage?
Maintenance appointments are optional. If you do not return for refresher (touch-up), it will completely fade away over time. Everyone's maintenance schedule is different based on the area of the body and how fast the skin exfoliates. A few clients come in every few months for refresher sessions and others only need to come in annually.
What happens if I get a tan?
When your skin tans, the pigment applied to the skin will not change color or tan with the surrounding skin.

We advise our vitiligo clients to maintain a constant skin color throughout the year so that their vitiligo makeup will maintain the best color match for as long as possible. However, some clients will schedule a maintenance appointment around the time that they get a tan in early summer so that we can match their pigment to that tanned skin color. As the tan lightens up a bit during the winter, pigment will gradually fade a little so that it will also lighten up.
If I swim in the ocean, will salt water affect the results or longevity?
No, salt water does not affect the results or how long it last. It will not change the color of your pigments.
If I swim in the pool, will cholrine water affect the results or longevity?
No, chlorine water does not affect the results or how long it last. It will not change the color of your pigments.
What is the price of the Vitiligo Camouflage procedure?
The cost of a 4 sessions package to camouflage approximately 9 square inches (3" x 3") of skin is as following:
  • Four 90-120 minutes (monthly) sessions at $600 per session (total $2,400).
